4 ton floor jack
Four ton capacity equals 8,000 lb [3,629 kg]. That is the maximum rated lift. It is not a support rating. Use jack stands after lifting.
This page explains the 4 ton floor jack class with sizes and lift range and safe use. You get dual units on every figure. Native unit first and the conversion in brackets.
What 4 ton means
A floor jack is a lifting device. It raises part of the vehicle. It does not hold the load for work. After the lift place jack stands under maker approved points and lower the load onto the stands.
Capacity is the rated lift at the saddle. Four ton means up to 8,000 lb [3,629 kg]. One lift point carries a share of the curb weight. A 6,000 lb [2,722 kg] SUV can place about 1,500 to 3,000 lb [680 to 1,360 kg] on one corner depending on balance. The 4 ton rating covers that use when you follow the manual.

| SUV or pickup half ton | about 4,500 to 6,000 lb [about 2,041 to 2,722 kg] | about 4.5 in to 5.5 in [about 114 to 140 mm] | about 20 in to 24 in [about 508 to 610 mm] |
| Pickup three quarter ton or one ton | about 6,000 to 8,500 lb [about 2,722 to 3,856 kg] | about 5 in to 6 in [about 127 to 152 mm] | about 24 in to 26 in [about 610 to 660 mm] |
Always confirm lift points in the vehicle manual before you buy.
Common 4 ton types
Low profile shop jack
Built for cars and light trucks that sit low. Minimum saddle height can be near 4 in to 4 and a quarter in [about 102 to 109 mm]. Maximum lift is near 20 in [about 508 mm]. Many use dual piston pumps for faster contact.
Long chassis service jack
Built for trucks and service bays. Longer frame for reach under axles. Minimum saddle height near 5 in [about 127 mm]. Maximum lift near 25 to 26 in [about 635 to 660 mm]. Heavier frames and larger saddles.

Materials and features that matter
Steel or aluminum
Steel frames are durable. Aluminum frames cut weight for easier moves. Both can meet the same capacity when built to the standard.
Handle length
Longer handles give easier lifts and keep you clear of rocker panels. Check two piece handles for a firm joint.
Saddle pads
Use a rubber pad for pinch weld lifts when the maker allows it. A U slot pad can help on pinch welds.
Safety valve
Overload valves stop unsafe lifts. They do not replace stands.

Maintenance and storage
- Keep the ram clean and store the jack with the saddle down
- Use the hydraulic oil in the manual and bleed air per the manual after transport
- Inspect wheels and the saddle and fasteners before use
- Replace worn pads and keep the release valve smooth and clean
Safe use in one page
- Read the jack manual and the vehicle manual
- Use level concrete and wheel chocks on the ground
- Set the parking brake before any lift
- Center the saddle on the maker approved lift point
- Lift only enough to place stands at the same height
- Lower the load onto stands rated for the job
- Never work under a vehicle that sits on a jack
Rules align with ASME PASE and national safety guidance. See the references below.
FAQ
- Is 4 ton enough for a full size truck
- Yes for lifting one corner or one axle when you follow the manual. The jack raises part of the weight. Use stands for support.
- Can I use this on asphalt
- Use a firm level surface. Asphalt can soften in heat. Use thick plywood under the jack and under stands if the surface is not concrete.
- Do I need jack stands with a 4 ton jack
- Yes. A floor jack is for lifting. Stands are for support. The standards and the manuals require stands for any work.
- Are jack stand ratings per stand or per pair
- Labels vary by maker and region. Some rate per pair. Some rate per stand. Read the label on your stands and follow the manual.
- Is aluminum safe for trucks
- Yes when the rating matches the task and the jack meets the standard. Check minimum saddle height and maximum lift for your frame.
